A note from the author

We put this AVMovie together (a compilation of still photos and video clips) to show off London theatres as they are seen most often by theatre goers – by night.

Thanks to Ben Shafik for his lighthearted and  informative commentary and Fionn O'Lochlainn for the original music.

Watch out for the new version with current liveries and the names of the theatres as they appear.

Baxter
Tennessee Williams wrote this play which originally opened in Broadway New York in 1947 and had a successful run of two years starring Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh.

The play was an inverted romance in which the expected outcome of a beautiful and alluring lady from the South has to face the consequences of her past - and worse still trying to hide her past from her sister and raw immigrant worker brother in law. The play started a epoch of dramas in which reality meant brutal and often careless interactions between lovers.

Tennessee Williams crossed many boundaries in his raw depictions of the lowest and least tender renditions of love between men and women who have fallen victim to their over indulgence, neurosis and drink .

Story
Blanche DuBois - the un-heroine turns up at her sister's home in a poor part of New Orleans  - a far cry from the crumbling grandeur she has left behind in the South.  Hoping for comfort and a new start when she escapes her past she only exacerbates her misfortune by lying to hide it and is consequently brutalised and tormented by Stanley, her sister's husband as a result.

She escapes her own pain by becoming delusional.  The play is a classic in it's own right having won many awards and contributing to the careers of actors who played the parts.  The run in the Donmar is no exception having sold out all the tickets and been acclaimed as a great production.
