One of England's favourite comedy films from Ealing Studios in 1955 has
been brought to the Stage with a fantastic cast and a re-write.
The beauty of the theatre over film is that the players are forever responding to the audience who's energy is a part of the performance of the night. This is already a classic in its own right and all lovers of English comedy will love this play. I'd go so far as to say all lovers (and students) of English humour will not wish to miss it. Marcia Warren is a crucial element in the film and play and her unwavering consistency in being the pivotal point of reference for the better-known stars make her the equivalent of the water in which the bigger fish swim. She has attracted attention for her performance. Dubbed a 'black' comedy - it isn't any longer black or grey or whatever.... it's just incredibly funny.
STORYProfessor Marcus and his wily gang struggle to portray themselves as amateur musicians bearing an array of violins and a cello. They need to muster their pretense just to rent rooms from Mrs Wilberforce who lives in a strategically placed old house over the station. Her delight at having such interesting lodgers causes her to proffer multiple cups of tea to the villinous gang who carry on assuming that she doesn't notice a thing.
Instead of just using her house the string quintet involve her in their plan to carry out a robbery of quantities of cash. But she notices rather a lot without letting on and gets her strict and proper hands on the cash instead. The police are left bewildered by the heist job despite Mrs Wilberforce's delicate attempt to alert them to the plot. Charming Marcus, also bewildered, decides that the only way to keep her quiet is to kill her. It seems that her parrot, General Gordon is her only friend when the little old lady is left alone in the house with five potential murderers. But which one is desperate enough to do the deed? Bars |
