Background
A girl (Little Voice) and her mother (Mari) present another musical drama by Jim Cartwright who
wrote a play in the '90s that won awards and was made into a film in
'98. It's said to be funny, in a dark way a moved people as
only the beastliness of a mother towards her daughter can - especially
when she competes unaware of the talent of her daughter that drew the
interest of the man she fancied.
Diane Vickers, having been a runner up in the X Factor is the star pull and
is taking her musical career as serious as her acting one by recording
her first album while the show is running in the West End.
The Story
Little Voice largely avoided her bombastic and unpleasant mother. She played father's collection
of records and was able to mimic the voices of stars like Shirley
Bassey and Judy Garland and impersonate their style. Far from being
outgoing she hardly ever spoke - her mother was the tour de force from
whom she shrank.
Mari has a new boyfriend
(Ray) who is a club agent and hears Little Voice and believes he can
make her a star Mari has plans of her own hoping that Ray can raise her
to a more affluent life. She levels her drama at Little Voice who
offers little resistance while she was learning how to be Marilyn
Monroe and Dusty Springfield and others alone in her own room hoping
someone would love her one day.
Ray takes her to a club where she finally astonishes them all with a great performance.
The play takes a more tragic turn which eventually reminds Little Voice how to be more herself.
